The Gilroy High junior varsity football team suffered its first loss of the season last week when Serra scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to prevail 20-7.

“Against good teams, you have to play perfect games to win,” said head coach Jack Daley. “Defensively, I thought we played fairly well.”

Sophomore Richie Sotelo scored the Mustangs (3-1) touchdown in the third quarter. Jeffery Smith kicked the extra point.

The freshman team also came up short, falling 15-7. Logan Sweeney made a touchdown pass for Gilroy’s touchdown.

The GHS cross country team fared well in a triangular meet against North Salinas and Everett Alvarez at Christmas Hill Park.

For the JV boys, Adrian Cazas placed first in 20:17 with Ryan St. Pierre second in 20:26 and Tyler West fifth in 21:54.

Hanna Fiorio paced ther JV girls, finishing third in 26:17. Erin Sterner was fourth in 26:29 with Carly Apuzzo seventh in 27:02.

The frosh-soph boys made a sweep of the top three spots with Juan Velasquez first in 18:42 followed by Matt Sosa in 19:15 and Wesley Thielges in 19:26.

The frosh-soph girls did just as well as they also swept the top three spots. Brandie Rodriguez was first in 22:55, followed by Anne Donahoe in 23:47 and Lisa Grisham in 25:42.

Gilroy’s JV volleyball team came up short at Notre Dame, falliung 25-18, 25-16.

“I think we did a lot better than we have been doing,” freshman Alana Osaki said.

Gilroy’s JV water polo team edged Carmel 6-4 at the GHS pool.
