McBrearty, Dragotto only winners in 6-1 match loss to
Chieftains
GILROY – The Gilroy High boys tennis team was the only thing standing in the way of Palma clinching the Tri-County Athletic League title with the Chieftains in town for Tuesday’s match.
But despite putting forth a strong effort of their home courts, the Mustangs could not hang with this season’s league champions, dropping a 6-1 decision.
“I was happy with the way everyone played,” first-year head coach Chris Wolowiec said. “Palma is just a more experienced team. I think we played them competitively.”
Gilroy’s only victory came in the No. 3 doubles bout, as Anthony Dragotto and Ryan McBrearty – playing together for only the second time this season – won in straight sets.
“I just went with it today again, and it seemed to work out,” said Wolowiec, whose squad falls to 5-8 in T-CAL with only Thursday’s match at Live Oak remaining. “We’re pretty close with Live Oak. We lost twice before to them but hopefully we can end the season with a win.”
Although the Mustangs lost all four singles bouts in straight sets to Palma, they threatened in the No. 1 spot with senior Christian Rivera up 3-0 in the second set and No. 2 Peter Adams dropping his second set, 6-4. Freshman Ben Wilson lost in the No. 3 position and senior Andres Sandoval faltered in the No. 4 slot.
“(Rivera) battled him,” Wolowiec said. “My other guys battled, too.”
Gilroy’s top tandem of Anthony Christian and Chris Adams lost in straight sets, while the No. 2 pair of Alex Santa Maria and Julian Mireles fell in three sets, coming back from a 5-0 deficit in the third before taking a 6-4 loss.
“(Palma) is good,” Wolowiec said. “They are the best team in league.”
