Gilroy – Gilroy assured itself its first winning badminton season in five years by earning a 12-3 victory Friday over Live Oak.

The Mustangs won seven of the 10 contested matches and picked up five forfeits en route to improving to 9-4.

Gilroy coach Wayne Scott credited the enhanced workout regimen in the early season with helping the Mustangs top the .500 mark for the season for the first time since 2002.

“The fact that we did a lot of conditioning this year has helped,” Scott said. “The previous years we had not gotten to great shape. Also, we have a very experienced team.”

The boys doubles led the way by sweeping its three matches. Bao Diep and Hein Nguyen won 17-15, 15-5, Brian Hentschke and Will Ebert earned a 15-7, 15-0 victory and James Kwong and Rafael Quiroz won 15-5, 15-5.

Johnny Kuang (13-15, 15-7, 15-11) and Jorge Fernandez (15-13, 15-5) earned wins in boys singles and Dhartiben Soni collected a 17-14, 15-2 win at No. 3 singles. Connie Kuang and Fernando Arellano rounded it out with a 15-10, 15-0 victory in mixed doubles.
