SALINAS – Winning all but one match, the Gilroy High girls varsity tennis team served up a 6-1 victory in its Tri-County Athletic League opener against Alvarez on Tuesday afternoon.

Team captain and returning No. 1 singles player Meha Munshi defeated Renee Musgrove 6-2, 6-1.

“(Meha Munshi) played excellent,” GHS coach Jami Reynolds said.” She was ready to go.”

Mustangs’ No. 2 singles player Alissa Castro celebrated her birthday by blanking the Vikings’ Rosa Perez 6-0, 6-0. Jennifer Kwong, who earned a spot as the No. 3, and freshman Lindsay Holt (No. 4 singles), easily handled their opponents in straight sets.

The Mustangs’ top-two doubles pairings each had to battle through tough matches to capture points for the team. Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez pulled out a win 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 – the final set is played as the first to 10 points.

Ashley Ngyuen and Sami Holder came from a set down to take their match 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.

“Some of the girls played in their first official league match so it took a couple games for them to get their feet settled,” Reynolds said.

The Mustangs travel to Morgan Hill and take on Live Oak in a practice match today.
