SEASIDE – As Tyler Hartman’s confidence grows, so does Gilroy High boys basketball’s chances of winning games.

The senior small forward had his second huge ouput of the season Friday night at Seaside, scoring 15 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and dishing out five assists to help the Mustangs top the Spartans 51-47. A game prior, Hartman had 20 points and eight rebounds in a 22-point win over Carmel.

“Tyler just continues to do what I thought he would do all season,” Gilroy coach Jeremy Dirks said,

A slow first quarter finished with Gilroy trailing 10-7. The second quarter was far more fast-paced, however, as Gilroy outscored Seaside 21-16 to lead by two at halftime, 28-26. A 13-6 advantage in the third quarter allowed Gilroy to hang on for the four-point victory as Seaside outscored the Mustangs by five, 15-10, in the fourth.

Partly to blame for the close contest was poor free-throw shooting. Gilroy went 11-for-25 from the charity stripe.

“I think it’s in their head,” Dirks said, “They’re young, it’s their first time on varsity (for many).”

The coach added that he thought such numbers will improve as “most of their shots (technique-wise) are pretty sound.”

Max Fishler had 10 points and eight rebounds for Gilroy, and Greg Hamik had eight points, three assists. Elijah Harrell continued to be a steady hand at the point guard position with eight points and five assists, and center Michael Hartman had three points and four rebounds. The Mustangs also received key contributions from reserves Dolapo Opere (six points, four assists) and Neil Azcueta ( 1 point).

Results from Monday’s game at Santa Teresa were unavailable as of press time. Gilroy will play at San Lorenzo Valley tonight at 7 p.m. before returning home later in the week to host the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament, beginning Thursday. The Mustangs will play Live Oak at 8 p.m. in the first round.
