Gilroy High’s boys and girls soccer teams wrap up preseason play
this weekend.
GILROY – One half was all that really needed to be played Tuesday.
Assisted by defender Rahni Giardina, forward Ariana Carrillo scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to help Gilroy High’s girls soccer team secure a 1-1 draw with visiting Santa Teresa Tuesday afternoon at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
Both teams scored their goals in the first half, leaving things all-square after the intermission.
It was the third tie of the season for the Mustangs (4-1-3), which will wrap up preseason play against visiting Presentation at noon on Saturday.
Carrillo, a junior, has been making the most of her opportunities in the first half of the schedule, netting six of her 21 shots on goal. The Mustangs were equally opportunistic in Tuesday’s match, as they only took three shots. Mandi Jo Torres and Sarina Sandoval both recorded two saves in goal.

Seeing its four-game winning streak come to an end last week – the Mustangs lost a penalty kick shootout 4-2 following a scoreless draw in regulation with Pajaro Valley in the Homestead Christmas Cup final – Gilroy will have a chance to rebound as it plays against some of North California’s best teams starting Friday at the De La Salle College Showcase in Concord
Facing host De La Salle in a first-round matchup at 7 p.m., the Mustangs (6-1-3) are hoping to have another strong showing following last year’s 1-0-1 record in tow games.
The Mustangs will face College Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
