Shooting guard Derek Jensen led the Mustangs with 33 points (22 in the second half), 12 rebounds and seven assists, and forward Marshad Johnson pitched in 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Trailing 46-30 at halftime, Gilroy exploded for 30 points in the third period while limiting the Eagles to just 10. The result was a 60-56 advantage entering the final period.
Alvarez was able to outscore the Mustangs 26-16 in the fourth quarter, however, and was led by three scorers going for 20 points or more. Matt Baker had 26 points, Preston Juarez had 21 (including five three-pointers) and David Sandoval had 20.
Gilroy senior point guard Kevin Siha, playing in only his second game this season after injuring his knee during summer league, had three assists and 12 points, all coming by three-pointers.
Other scorers for Gilroy included Tyler Hartman (five points, four rebounds), Stephen Galtman (three points, two rebounds), Jeremy Damon (two points) and Kendrick Azcueta (one point).
Gilroy is now 7-18 overall, 1-9 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Alvarez is 8-17, 3-8 TCAL.
The Mustangs will play their last game at home Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Salinas.
