Drivers along Highway 1 may have been surprised to see the words “GHS to CCS” in the sand dunes off the side of the road.
That was just Gilroy High’s girls’ field hockey team expressing their feelings Friday on the bus ride home after completing an incredibly dominating run through the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 13-0 rout of host York.
“That was for all of Monterey County to read,” co-coach Erin Gemar said.
And Kelly Perkins staged a performance for field hockey teams throughout the country to take notice. The senior scored six goals and had three assists, including the Mustangs’ 100th league goal. GHS outscored league opponents 107-1 this season.
“Our seniors are pretty amazing,” co-coach Adam Gemar said. “Kelly had nine points and Roshi (Russhelle Preeshl) had five.”
Another senior, Dana Schoeneman, started the scoring in the first half. Amanda Vasquez, Amanda Spellman, Diana Carter and Perkins scored other first-half goals.
Gilroy exploded for eight second-half goals with Perkins getting five of them. Preeshl had two second-half goals and finished with three assists. Senior Erin Magill, who scored the other second-half goal, added two assists.
Others joining in the scoring parade were Laura Spellman and Stephanie Glenn with two assists apiece, Elise Ogle and Amanda Spellman with one each. Senior Samantha Pipkin was voted GHS Player of the Game.
The Mustangs, who finished 12-0 in league and are 13-4-1 overall, will find out Tuesday their first opponent in the Central Coast Section playoffs when the seeds are announced.
