Gilroy – The Gilroy Mustang wrestlers had no trouble man-handling TCAL opponent Live Oak at Gilroy Wednesday night, earning a 72-6 victory. In fact the only match that the Acorns won was a forfeit by the Mustangs in the 103-pound weight class.

The ‘Stangs, ranked No. 1 in CCS and currently No. 6 in the state, wrestled the match minus two of their best, namely Armando Gonzalez (140) and Luis Chavez (Heavyweight).

Filling in at the heavyweight class was Chaz Guerrero who won a 6-2 decision over Live Oak’s Tom Method.

As for Gonzalez, head coach and father Armando said, “He’s (Armando) ready to wrestle now but we’re giving him the full six weeks to heal up. He’ll definitely be back for Mid-Cals (Jan. 27-28).

“Armando’s working hard and I’d say that right now he’s at about 90-95 percent,” Gonzalez said. “We just don’t want to rush it or take any chances. He’ll come back next week (Wednesday) against Sobrato so that he can face live competition before the TCAL meet.”

In Wednesday night’s meet the closest match was between Gilroy’s Chris Krough and Live Oak’s Steve Dominiquez in the 135-pound weight class. Krough prevailed winning 10-9 by decision.

“It’s an exciting time for us as a team because all of the kids are getting healthy,” Gonzalez admitted. “We only sent four wrestlers to Five Counties and they all placed which was a real good sign for us. Right now we’re concentrating on working hard in the classroom and doing our homework so that all the kids are academically eligible down the stretch.”

Gilroy will now turn its attention to this weekend’s meet at Overfelt where CCS nemesis Fremont will also be wrestling
