team to within one win of the Central Coast Section playoffs.
The great thing about having a talented, youthful team, is that
they have another year or two to get even better – hence the grin
on LaGuardia’s face.

Last season, the second-year head coach led a young Mustangs team to within one win of the Central Coast Section playoffs.

The Mustangs return seven players, including four starters, from their 2008 lineup – a team that went 6-2 in Tri-County Athletic League play. The 2009 Mustangs have just one senior on a junior-laden team, and welcome back their leading scorer from a year ago, Chelsea Hill.
“I’m extremely excited,” LaGuardia said. “I’ve been looking forward to the season.”
As a sophomore, Hill, the catalyst in an offense that averaged seven goals per match last season, found the back of the cage 29 times in nine games.
“She is an all-around great athlete,” LaGuardia said. “A couple of those games she played goalie.”
LaGuardia figures his offense will be even more explosive this year.
“Over the off-season a lot of the girls got stronger in terms of their shot,” LaGuardia said. “We have a couple more weapons this season.”
A defensive-minded squad last year, the swarming press defense the Mustangs used gave opponents issues getting to the cage, allowing just five goals per contest.
The Mustangs open the season against rival San Benito on Thursday at Gilroy High.
