The Gilroy girls soccer team salvaged a 1-1 tie with visiting San Lorenenzo Valley Tuesday.

Ariana Vera scored the tying goal with an assist from Nicole Gonzales 15 minutes into the second half when Gilroy’s wings won a corner kick and SLV wasn’t able to clear the loose ball.

Vera had a couple open looks at the goal during the game, including a one-on-one with the goalie that just went about a foot left of the net in the first half.

“She missed some goals, but she has the speed,” said Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez. “She’ll get many more chances during the rest of the season.”

SLV (3-1-2) got on board first midway through the first half with a long-range goal.

“We just gave them a little too much space, which we took care of the rest of the game,” Hernandez said.

Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Rahni Giardina, Irene Figueroa, Cheyenne Strametz and Maritza Gonzalez, who all played the whole game.

Hernandez said he was especially impressed with the play of Gonzalez, who was recovering from a migraine in the game against Presentation.

“She really stepped up,” he said. “She was winning balls in the center of the field and distributing the ball well.”

Goalie Lauren Bertero had four saves for the Mustangs.

On Thursday, Gilroy (1-2-1) will go against Scotts Valley, who defeated San Benito 2-1 Tuesday.
