Last week was one to forget for the Gilroy High baseball team.
After beating Saratoga 13-5 in the first game of the Monta Vista-Cupertino Host Lions Easter Tournament, the Mustangs went on to lose their next three games.
The defeats included a close 9-8 loss to Homestead, a 14-4 blowout by Mitty and a mistake-prone 14-2 loss to Monta Vista.
“We had a rough week, that’s for sure,” Gilroy coach Clint Wheeler said. “We didn’t do a whole lot of good things.”
When the Mustangs pitching
Gilroy was up 3-0 after the top of the first inning against Mitty, but the Monarchs scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame before adding five in the second and three in the third. Gilroy scored a run in the top of the fourth but Mitty responded again, this time with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Against Monta Vista, the Mustangs led 2-0 after the end of the first inning but trailed 5-2 after the second. Gilroy went on to give up seven runs in the fourth. Monta Vista had a 15-3 hit advantage, and committed two errors to Gilroy’s five.
“Pitching – were struggling,” Wheeler said, “(and) long innings are making guys sit on their heels a little bit and guys are making errors later on.”
The Mustangs will have a chance to get back on the right track in their game today at 4 p.m. at Live Oak. The matchup will be difficult considering that the Acorns are 12-1 this year, with their only loss coming in a season-opening 6-5 defeat to Bay Area powerhouse Valley Christian (12-3).
Pitcher Taylor Chris will take the mound for Gilroy.
