Jeff Myers knows his team isn’t going to triumph in too many dual meets this season.
But in the case of the undermanned Gilroy High boys’ and girls’ track and field teams, which both lost Thursday in their duals with North Salinas 46-89 and 56-70, respectively, looking at the whole will sometimes bury the finer details. And as coach Myers will tell you, there were a number of fine performances.
“Overall, we had 44 season-best marks in both the boys and girls after having 48 set in week 1,” Myers said. “Across the board the athletes are improving, and that is what the staff and I look at the most.”
Two individuals that have been looking very strong are seniors Derek Pesta and Travis Reyes. Pesta finished in first in the 1600, distancing himself from the pack with a time of four minutes, 45 seconds. Reyes, competing in several events, “has been looking stronger in the sprints each week,” Myers said. He won both the 100- and 200-meter dash.
The boys were somewhat limited in other events as they were missing Peter Guenther and Steven Heisey, two athletes Myers believes will be key to any success Gilroy has this season.
For the girls, Elise Ogle continued to show her speed and endurance as she took first in the 1600 in 5:34. Along with Kathleen Miller (5:38, 2nd) and Jessica Hopf (5:40, 3rd), the Mustangs dominated the mile, as well as the two-mile race. Christina Bobula took third in the 3200 while Miller and Hopf finished first and second, respectively.
Sara Unadia started to show her potential by taking first in the 110 HH (17.35) and the high jump (five feet).
“We continue to get better each week and that is the goal,” Myers said, “to peak and be at our best in May at the league championships.”
