Gilroy tennis team has matches suspended due to rain

The season came to a close for Gilroy’s varsity boys water polo team Monday, losing 8-1 to Palma in the first round of the TCAL Championships at Carmel High School.
Daniel Shields provided the lone goal for the Mustangs on a five-meter penalty shot in the second quarter.
Gilroy hung tough with Palma in the first half, keeping the game scoreless in the first quarter and trailing by only a goal at halftime. The Chieftains were able to distance themselves in the final two periods though, scoring three goals in each quarter.

Salinas
Gilroy’s girls tennis team fought wind and conferences foes in the first day of the Tri-County Athletic League Championships before play was suspended due to rain in Salinas Monday.
Each team was only allowed to bring its top two singles and doubles partners during the season.
The Mustangs’ No. 2 singles player Amy Huang advanced by defeating Christina Wong of Alvarez 6-3, 6-0. Huang was beginning her second match of the single-elimination tournament against Teagan Seeley of Salinas when play was postponed until today.
Gilroy’s No. 1 singles player Mischelle Tajan drew Notre Dame’s Brittlan Schwartz in the first round and fell 6-3 on both sets.
“They had some really long rallies but Brittlan made less unforced errors,” Reynolds said. The match was the final of Tajan’s season and high school career.
No. 2 doubles pair Kimberly Johnson and Natalie Toews lost a close battle at the net 7-5, 6-2 to Audra Bell and Shelby Weber of Salinas High School. Bell and Weber then advanced to play GHS’ No. 1 pairing of Karrissa Tellez and Holly Hunter, who beat Gracie Franco and Betty Bernal of North Salinas 6-1, 6-3.
The second round match was also postponed to this afternoon due to wet conditions.
