Kevin Siha and E.J. Harrell got Gilroy off to a fast start Friday and the Mustangs were in control during a 52-46 Tri-County Athletic League win over host North Salinas.

Siha hit two shots from the outside and Harrell converted two baskets off steals as Gilroy (11-6 overall, 1-2 TCAL) jumped ahead 16-7 in the first quarter. GHS coach Bud Ogden platooned two five-player units throughout the first half as he tried to find the right combination.

“We’re trying to work on finding the right combination,” Ogden said. “We’ll see who’s going to play hard and who plays well together. We have to start from square 1 and re-evaluate everyone.”

Jason Conrad had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Kameron Handy had 10 points to lead the Mustangs, who bounced back from Wednesday’s disappointing defeat to San Benito. Spencer Ford had eight points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, and Lorenzo Dobson had six points and eight rebounds. Gilroy led by as many as 15 points in the second half.

“We played a lot better but we still need to take better care of the basketball,” Ogden said.
