Carmel – The objects of Gilroy’s field hockey game at Carmel were to have fun, avoid injury and get everyone into the game.
All three goals were achieved as the short-handed Mustangs continued to roll through the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 7-0 win over the Padres.
It’s well known among league members that Carmel’s field is in poor condition. Thus, coach Adam Gemar was stressing short passes and keeping a lid on emotions to the GHS players.
Dana Schoeneman had two goals and an assist as GHS (9-3-1 overall, 8-0 MTAL) rushed in front 5-0 at halftime. Schoeneman scored the first two goals of the game. It was the second straight game she has scored two goals.
“One of the goals of the girls was to not get frustrated,” Gemar said. “We stuck to simple basics and everybody played. They (Padres) had no shots on goal. We had fun.”
The Mustangs were missing Kelly Perkins, who was on a college visit, and Russhelle Preeshl and Stephanie Glenn, who were injured. Nevertheless, there were plenty of girls to pick up the slack.
Amanda Vasquez, Diana Carter, Lindsey Valadez, Elise Ogle and Linsey Kwong scored a goal apiece. Erin Magill, Amanda Spellman and Valadez had assists. And Vasquez was voted Player of the Game by her teammates.
In eight MTAL games this season, GHS has outscored its opponents 65-1. The Mustangs take a one-week break before returning to action next Monday at home with Monterey.
It will be the start of a three-game week that includes a nonleague encounter Thursday with Northern California powerhouse Archbishop Mitty.
