Watsonville scores late goal to tie the game
Watsonville – Kristi Figueroa scored first and Amanda Bruce scored last.
But Watsonville scored the two goals in between as the teams fought to a 2-2 tie Friday in nonleague girls’ soccer.
Midway through the first half, Sara Hugo crossed the ball to Bruce. The senior midfielder kicked the ball to Figueroa, who beat the goalie for the only score of the first half.
After the Wildcatz got the equalizer and the go-ahead tally midway through the second half, Bruce scored the Mustangs’ tying goal for the second straight game. Bruce received a through ball from Figueroa and scored with four minutes left.
“They play a very similar style to us,” GHS coach Jose Hernandez said of Watsonvile. “That’s why I like to play against them. They use the ground game with small passes.”
The outcome was a repeat of last year when the teams tied 2-2 in Gilroy.
The Mustangs finished the game short-handed with only one available girl on the bench. Because of illness and personal issues, Gilroy started the game with only 14 girls. Ariane Vera turned an ankle and Hugo suffered a facial injury.
The Mustangs (4-4-2) return home for a 6pm Tri-County Athletic League game Thursday with Notre Dame. GHS is 1-0-1 in the TCAL.
