Morgan Hill – The Gilroy Mustangs boys volleyball team played their sixth consecutive away match against a young, inexperienced Sobrato Bulldogs squad and came away victorious in three straight games, 25-16, 25-4, 25-12. The win improves the Mustangs record to 5-1 in Tri-County Athletic League play.

Gilroy’s senior setter, Gene Losongco lead the way for the Mustangs (11-5, 5-1 TCAL) with 28 assists in the match. Ryan Chisolm, Vinny Delorenzo and Travis Graham were the kill leaders for Gilroy. Chisolm finished with 10 kills off of 12 attacks, Delorenzo had nine kills on 10 attacks and Graham recorded eight kills on 12 attacks. Senior middle blocker, Dominic Jackson led the Mustangs with four aces against the Bulldogs.

“I thought we played a really good game,” said Gilroy coach Craig Martin. “We had some adjustments in our lineup due to illness. Players stepped in and picked it up.”

Losongco leads the Mustangs with 289 assists on the season, while Delorenzo leads Gilroy in kills (120), digs (54) and aces (26). Chisolm is second on the Mustangs in kills (108) and digs (45) and has nine blocks so far this season. Jackson is Gilroy’s block leader with 33 on the season.

“I was really impressed with how positive Sobrato’s team was,” said Martin. “Their coaching staff was really positive. For being inexperienced players, they really stayed upbeat. Sobrato’s Jared Mammen, for a freshman that kid is really something.”

For the Mustangs junior setter Alan Hoshida saw his first action of the season and did a great job according to Martin.

“The biggest challenge for us is keeping our team together and worrying about getting our kids to buy into the new alignment, getting them to gel as a team in that new alignment,” said Martin.

The Mustangs head to Alisal on Thursday for their next match and Martin says he is not sure what to expect from the young Trojan team.

“They’re another team that is rebuilding,” said Martin. “I haven’t seen them yet this season, but I know they’re going to come out and be really scrappy.”
