MONTEREY – Gilroy downed host York High school 7-0 in a varsity field hockey contest Monday, pushing the Mustangs’ record to 2-0 on the season.

“I was proud of our team in their attitude and willingness to work on different goals and sportsmanship,” GHS coach Adam Gemar said.

The Mustangs received their first goal of the game less than two minutes in when Dani Hemeon scored on a Laura Spellman assist. Over the next nine minutes, Gilroy added four more goals, two each by Mandi Jo Torrez and Aubrey Young.

Torrez added another goal in the second half for the hat trick before Elise Ogle capped things off by netting a shot off a Lexi McPhail pass. McPhail had two assists on the game while Marissa McBride and Jennifer Rose also tallied points by feeding successful strikes on goal.

Gemar said the player of the game was defender Katelyn Nebesnick, “who is improving by leaps and bounds.”

The Mustangs will be back on the field Wednesday in Gilroy at 5:30 p.m. against Saratoga. The junior varsity contest will begin at 4 p.m.
