Gilroy opens at home
Gilroy – Gilroy was rewarded for its stellar season by gaining a first-round home game in the Central Coast Section Field Hockey Championships.

The GHS Mustangs, the No. 5-seeded team in the field of 12, open with the Homestead Mustangs at 3pm Thursday at Garcia-Elder Complex.

“We look forward to home games, playing on the turf,” co-coach Adam Gemar said. “That’s where we play our best. Were happy with where we are seeded.”

Homestead, 9-4-4, finished second in the West Valley Athletic League.

Gilroy (13-4-1) is led by high-scoring senior forwards Kelly Perkins and Russhelle Preeshl. But the whole team is playing well entering the playoffs, having breezed through the Mission Trail Athletic league.

“I’m happy with the way we’re playing” Gemar said. “”We have 10 girls who are playoff tested and are much improved. We started a little slow this season. Everyone is clicking now, playing and passing well.”

Not surprisingly, Archbishop Mitty got the No. 1 seed. The Monarchs were champions of the rugged Mt. Hamilton League.

Gilroy would face the Mt. Hamilton’s No. 3 team, Leland, if it wins Thursday. The Chargers were one of four teams to receive first-round byes.

GHS is looking to improve on 2005 when it advanced to the CCS semifinals before losing 2-0 to Mitty.
