As a taxpayer I get very upset and angry at the waste that continues to go on at Gavilan College.
I have a list a mile long, but I have to keep this letter limited to 500 words. I have gone to security on several occasions to report broken water pipes that take days to get fixed while water is being wasted, and lights being left on in unoccupied buildings.
Recently, the police academy left the lights on in their classrooms three days in a row over Labor Day weekend and again overnight earlier this week. Why can’t security turn off the lights when checking the buildings?
I have also gone to security on a number of occasions to report unlocked doors or doors left ajar with no one in sight. Then they wonder why there is so much theft and vandalism on campus.
More than half of the beautiful roses planted in parking lot “F” several years ago appear to be dead, and that area is full of weeds now. That’s the parking lot adjacent to the administration offices and it doesn’t provide a very welcome sight to visitors.
The grass sod laid down last year around the gym is now dead from lack of maintenance, and areas of the football field that was re-sodded are showing signs of neglect. The trash and garbage left all over the campus by some students is a disgrace.
I know most students are considerate and courteous but we have some that are inconsiderate slobs with no common courtesy that ruin it for all. When I walk pass the student center it looks like a tornado swept through leaving trash all over the tables and chairs. I don’t understand why security can’t enforce littering rules. I have to give the Gavilan maintenance crew a lot of praise for the good job they try to do maintaining the campus with limited resources.
If they didn’t have to spend every morning picking up trash all over the campus, they might have the time to tend to more important things, such as fixing water leaks.
I have to say the chapel looks beautiful since it has been restored and painted, but the pond next to it is often stagnated and has been over the years. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which could carry the West Nile Virus.
The tennis courts are finally fixed, look good and would look even better were it not for all the surrounding weeds. I recently read a news story indicating that Gavilan is considering building dorms where the golf course is. This is a community college, not Cal Poly or San Jose State. The golf course is a fun place to go and not everyone can afford to play golf at courses such as Eagle Ridge. It seems evident that Gavilan has problems maintaining what they have now let alone undertaking more responsibilities.
Note to Gavilan President Steve Kinsella: You need to hire more maintenance personnel and concentrate on fixing and maintaining the campus you have now.
