New Chair for Teacher Such a Wonderful Gesture – and

a Lesson for City Council

Dear Editor,

Cheers to Aaron Valenta, Chima Ikeme and Steven Hebert for thinking of their teacher, Sharon Avina, and taking up a collection to get her a new chair.

It made me feel good to know that there are still lots of young people out there who don’t only think of themselves.

Perhaps the City Council should keep those names handy when it’s time to buy more chairs. It seems they got a much better bargain than the Council did (when the $1,000 chairs were purchased). Perhaps they could give them some money saving tips.

Applying the Anti-Islamic Center ‘Logic’ to Christians and Other Entire Religions

Dear Editor,

Nancy Murphy’s letter published June 12, states that an Islamic Center is a dangerous idea. If I’m understanding her correctly, she explains that the fanatics of any one religion (Muslims, for example) will make the peace-loving members of that society/religion our enemies, just like all the Germans that were controlled by the few true Nazis.

I am moved to point out that the fanatics of Christianity such as David Koresh and Jim Jones have not caused all the other good Christians to become my enemies, or any one else’s to my knowledge. There is no individual terrorist or crazy religious sect on this planet that will cause me to hate or fear an entire religion or society.

We must apply the logic evenly, and across the board, if we are to apply such hysteria, er, I mean, logic, to others.

City Hands Out Hefty Raises Then Asks Voters to Approve a Utility Tax???

Dear Editor,

Don’t ask me to approve a utility tax when City Administrator Jay Baksa and others just got a hefty raise so they could retire more comfortably! How dare the City of Gilroy!
