Gilroy – A Fresno driver gave “drive-thru” a whole new meaning Monday night, smashing through the glass panels of a Gilroy McDonald’s Restaurant.

The woman, who was not injured, was pulling into a handicapped spot in front of McDonald’s on Arroyo Circle, near the Gilroy Premium Outlet stores. Mistaking the gas pedal for the brakes, she crashed through the glass, overturning tables and chairs. No one was seated in the damaged area, Gilroy Police Cpl. Jason Kadluboski said. Her burgundy Toyota Camry, pulled away from the restaurant, sparkled with grains of glass.

Owner Steve Peat was agitated as he walked back and forth outside the store, where firefighters and police cordoned off the crash scene with yellow caution tape. It’s the second time someone has driven into his store, the last incident occurring roughly three years ago, he said. The restaurant remained open Tuesday, and is not expected to close.

The driver was not cited or charged, because police can only enforce a limited number of laws on private property, Kadluboski said, none of which were violated in the accident.
