Crews this week began grading and surveying work on Plaza Monterey, an approximately 14,000-square-foot property on Monterey Road just south of 10th Street that will consist of two components: an 11,000-square-foot retail building and a 3,000-square-foot restaurant structure that will be the new home of the taqueria, City of Gilroy Planner Melissa Durkin said.

“The more we can get downtown the better off we are,” said Eric Howard, president of Gilroy’s Downtown Business Association. “It’s not right in the heart of downtown, but it’s still in that area. Hopefully it can help pull people closer to downtown.”

The property is located within the city’s Downtown Specific Plan.

Super Taqueria is currently located at the corner of Chestnut and 10th streets, roughly half a mile from the proposed new location, 6951 Monterey Road. Employees at the restaurant said Wednesday the store would be moving, however, they did not know when.

The new structures will include an outdoor seating area and parking for up to 50 cars, according to a project outline provided by the City of Gilroy.

Plans could also call for a fountain in front of the restaurant building, which is slated to seat 132 people.

Each building with have varying heights, with the restaurant structure stretching more than 30 feet tall in some spots. The retail section is expected to be between 23 and 28 feet tall, according to the project outline.

The property is developed by DeLa Torre Properties and designed by architect Herb Bowen.
