SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – El Teatro Campesino will revive two vintage one-act plays, “Dark Root of a Scream” and “Dos Vatos,” by Ernie Palomino and Ricardo Duran, for a three-week engagement.

“Dark Root of a Scream” has not been on the theater’s stage since the 1980s. The play was last performed in New York at the Joseph Papp Theatre.

El Teatro Campesino chose “Dark Root of a Scream,” not just as a retrospective look at its earlier ‘popular classics,’ but because of its relevancy today.

The work examines the motives that propel young Chicanos to fight on the front lines of war and the subsequent affects on their immediate families and communities.

On a lighter note, the comedy “Dos Vatos” is being brought back to life for the first time since its inaugural production in 1970.

Artists-in-residence Ernie Palomino and Ricardo Duran penned the comedic of two common houseflies in their quest to find sustenance and freedom in the violently oppressive environment of a young woman’s studio apartment. Told in classic broad, slapstick-style humor, “Dos Vatos” was originally written as a puppet show. It has only been performed a few times since it’s first incarnation, and never before with real actors.

Both works by Luis Valdez will be directed by associate artistic director Lakin Valdez.

“Dark Root of a Scream” and “Dos Vatos” will open on Thursday, July 8, and run until Saturday, July 24.

Performance times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $8 for children under 12, and they are on sale now.

El Teatro Campesino is located at 705 Fourth St. in San Juan Bautista, and the box office is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Group rates are available.

To purchase tickets or for more information, call (831) 623-2445, or visit www.elteatrocampesino.com.

Due to adult language and subject matter, this production may not appropriate for children under 12.
