The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority has begun work on a new, permanent bus stop on southbound Arroyo Circle at Camino Arroyo in southeast Gilroy.

The VTA advertised the project for construction late last year, with the accepted bid of $75,000 coming in almost $50,000 under the original estimated cost of construction, according to the VTA. The new stop will replace a temporary stop at the same location that has proven to be not easily accessible due to the lack of sidewalks and passenger facilities. While construction is underway, passengers will be directed to the northbound stop across the street.

VTA revamped its service in Gilroy east of U.S. 101 last July after roadway improvements in the area were completed, according to the VTA. With the changes, VTA’s Route 14 is now able to provide easy access from the Gilroy Transit Center in downtown Gilroy to the various retail centers east of the freeway, as well as Saint Louise Regional Hospital, Kaiser Permanente’s clinic and the Valley Health Center.

Previously, bus service to the outlets had been by way of a bus making a one-way loop between the outlets and downtown Gilroy that was not very convenient for riders, according to the VTA.

The new stop will provide VTA riders a safe and pedestrian-friendly bus stop on southbound Arroyo Circle, according to the VTA. Construction activities will include the removal of existing curbs and landscaping, extending the sidewalk from the traffic signal at Camino Arroyo and construction of a passenger boarding area. The improvements will comply with all Americans with Disability Act standards and the stop will include a bus pull-out area so the vehicle is completely out of the lane of traffic when stopped.

When the stop first opens for service, it will be outfitted with temporary benches, and permanent passenger facilities will be installed shortly afterward, according to the VTA.

Construction will mostly be during the day, with lane closures in place when required by safety concerns, according to the VTA. The new stop is scheduled to be in service by April depending on weather.
