Dear Editor,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members of the community who voted to have me as a trustee, representing them on the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education. I appreciate the support and confidence in me that you displayed by your vote.
It is also appropriate for me to thank friends and acquaintances who posted signs on their lawns, distributed fliers, attended forums, and talked to their friends about considering my candidacy.
Additionally, the public forums, which were sponsored by the League of Women Voters, CMAP and The Dispatch, the Church of the Valley, the GTA/ GFT/ CSEA Alliance, and the Chamber of Commerce provided all candidates the opportunity to address pertinent issues, communicate our philosophies regarding public education, and listen to varying points of view. Certainly, through this process, I learned as much about myself as I did the other candidates.
A viable, representative board is an absolute necessity in a system of public education.
The following quote guided my thinking in deciding to run for this position: “I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion.” ~ Thomas Jefferson (passage from a letter to William Jarvis, Sept. 28, 1820)
