GILROY – Though the City of Gilroy is not banning plastic bans, the Gilroy City Council voted Monday night to encourage residents to sling around reusable, carry-out bags instead of their crinkly, single-use counterparts.
The resolution passed by a 6-1 vote. The motion to approve was made by Councilman Peter Leroe-Munoz. Councilman Bob Dillon was the lone “No” vote.
The Council also received a report from the Santa Clara County Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission recommending a regional policy to address the impacts of polystyrene, a material commonly used for food and beverage containers.
LO Adult Day Services earns award
Live Oak Adult Day Services earned United Way’s Partner Agency Excellence Award for achieving superior results. The agency offers critical services for older adults and their families at its centers in Cupertino, San Jose, Gilroy, Los Gatos, and Willow Glen.
The program is funded by United Way Silicon Valley in the Supporting Basic Human Needs category. Live Oak serves 300 frail elderly and dependent, low-income seniors with a specialized adult daycare program, which supports the basic needs of clients and their caregivers by improving the quality of life of these at-risk seniors through life-enhancing social opportunities, nutritious meals and mentally-stimulating activities aimed at sustaining and improving their resilience and overall health.
