BASKETBALL: Anchorpoint rally falls short in loss to Oakwood

Anchorpoint Christian and Oakwood Country School may have other simalarities, but on Wednesday, the one that stood out most was maximum effort out of its basketball players. In a Coastal Athletic League encounter between the tiniest high schools in Gilroy and Morgan Hill, host Oakwood played a calm, collected and well-executed three quarters of basketball. In rebuttal, Anchorpoint awoke late and forced the issue with a calculated fourth-quarter rally.

Maria Luisa Rangel passed away peacefully in Fullerton, CA surrounded by her family on Jan. 24, 2012, at the age of 90. She was the beloved wife of the late Bernardo Rangel. Loving mother of Lupe (Sean) Murphy, Jesse (Nancy) Rangel, Mary Palacios, Irene (Ezequiel) Contreras, Daniel Rangel and the late Robert Rangel. Cherished grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma of many. She is survived by her sister, Maria Romero. She will be missed by all and forever in our hearts.

Susanne LaFleur Harbutte, 60, surrounded by her loving family in Gilroy, passed away January 25, 2012, from cancer. A cherished kindergarten teacher for 34 years in the Morgan Hill Unified School District, Susanne was a passionate Master Teacher whose compassion and dedication changed so many children's lives.

Murder charges filed for baseball bat homicide

Charges of murder and assult with a deadly weapon were filed Jan. 25 against Russell Edward Garcia, 31, in connection with a 2010 home invasion in Gilroy that caused the death of an elderly man after he was severely beaten on the head with a baseball bat.

City, RDA unaffected by Madrone foreclosure

Loans made by the Morgan Hill redevelopment agency to affordable home buyers at Madrone Plaza will not be jeopardized by the bank's partial takeover of the project, city staff said.
