GILROY—On Friday, Christopher’s Carly McPolin signed her letter of intent to play rugby next season at Lindenwood University. The thing is, McPolin has never played a game of rugby in her life.

Gilroy Mayor Don Gage is bullish about the new car business. He’s optimistic that if the city chips in for traffic improvements, new signs and beautification at and around the local auto mall, the city will get a bigger cut in sales tax revenue as the dealerships prosper from a boost in customers.

Sign regulations lead to ‘unintended consequences’

Two business owners and a representative from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce appealed to the City Council, asking them to take another look at the city’s controversial sign ordinance—one that limits how long banners can be up and how much advertising can cover a business’ windows. In response to their concerns, the Council agreed to further explore some of the provisions.

Dealer helps Toys for Tots

South County Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is an official Toys for Tots location. Residents can donate new, unwrapped toys at either South County Chrysler Jeep Dodge on the corner of Chestnut Street and Stutz Way or at South County Ram at 500 Stutz Way in Gilroy. Donations are accepted seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. From Nov. 28 to Dec. 6, South County CDJR will donate one toy for each car sold.

Program helps new students adjust to GECA’s high standards

It’s lunchtime at a Gilroy high school campus and the music is blaring in the quad. Students are mingling with friends in the lunch line and eating pizza and fries at the lunch tables. It’s a snapshot of an ordinary high school; but looking deeper, one can see it’s anything but. Beyond the boundaries appear buildings that are home to a larger campus and older students: Gavilan Community College.

Family hoping to thank Good Samaritan who stopped road rage attack

The father of a teenage girl who was beaten during a road rage incident in Gilroy is hoping a man who helped stop the attack will come forward to be recognized as a Good Samaritan.
