A veteran San Mateo Sheriff’s deputy and Gilroy resident faces more than 50 years in prison if convicted on charges that he routinely sexually abused his 17-year-old daughter over a period of six years, according to authorities.

Attorney General calls for end to elementary school truancy crisis

Fierce fundraising under way for CHS sports complex
UPDATE: Larry Sanford told The Dispatch earlier this week that the design plans for the new Don Christopher Sports Complex at Christopher High School have been approved by the Department of the State Architect. The committee will meet Oct. 23 to begin developing the bidding process for contracts and hope to break ground at the site in early 2014.

Every September I look for the white-crowned sparrows to arrive. A small flock takes up residence each fall in an overgrown Lady Banks rose that covers the side of my neighbor's garage. They join the house finches, chestnut-backed chickadees and lesser goldfinches at my feeders. White-crowned sparrows are distinctive, with a narrow white stripe on the top of their heads, black stripes on either side of the white “crown” and broad white eyebrows.

On Nov. 5, voters will select a new director for the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District, a district that falls within Santa Clara County and serves the non-medical social needs of veterans residing in the area. Gilroy is the only incorporated city within the district and includes about 40 percent of the district’s population.
