Putting a dent in diabetes

When Rafael Arce began training for Mt. Madonna YMCA’s new diabetes prevention program, he related on a personal level to its importance in the South County community.

Train service extended

South County economic developers are cheerleading Monterey County's plan to bring train service from Salinas to San Jose, with stops in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and eventually Castroville and Pajaro.

City not backing down on URM liens

Dealing with downtown's 18 unreinforced masonry buildings is slow-going but starting to yield results, following City Council's last-ditch effort in June to enforce liens on property owners who were noncompliant in retrofitting their buildings to local and state safety regulations.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Day event

On Friday, Sept. 27, downtown San Jose will celebrate National Gay Men’s HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day with music, a light show, free giveaways, and free HIV testing. The outdoor event will be held from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. between South First Street and the Lightson Street alley.

Roxy and Rocco: An adventurous pair

Roxy and Rocco are best buds since the rambunctious Rocco joined the family five years ago. He’s an old time farm shepherd who roams “the farm” watching out for everyone and everything. She’s a lovable 9-year-old golden retriever who’s sweeter than an olallieberry pie from Gizdich Ranch. They both love to play fetch and their favorite outing is to Carmel Beach.

Ozzie and Sheldon: Twice the pup fun

Ozzie is 1-year-old and he loves to cuddle and shake your hand. He is very sensitive to feelings and will brighten your day. Sheldon is just a baby at 5 months old. He loves it when you rub his belly. He is still learning his name and what “no” means.

Scotty and Marvin: One pug is never enough

My husband and I had both wanted a pug our whole lives. When we finally got Scotty (right) he was everything and more than we ever hoped for. We soon realized that one was not enough. A little over a year later, we added Marvin (left) to our family, and the two of them have been inseparable ever since.

Special Section: It’s a (wonderful) dog’s life

It’s said that every dog has his day; For the dogs of South Valley, that day is today. When we asked you to submit stories about your favorite canine (or two), we didn’t anticipate the overwhelming response we’d receive. Our inbox was flooded with emails from those of you who love your dogs so much that you want to shout it from the rooftops - or at least share the stories of your beloved pups with the community.

Otis: An oldie … but a goodie

His peering bug eyes account for 20 percent of his body weight. He snores like an ox and snorts like a pig. He chases squeaky toys (blindly) with the feverish abandon of a puppy. He’s 91 in dog years, but loves a game of tug-of-war with BFF Dexter the Great Dane. And whether its the cataracts or a mysterious train of prolonged doggy daydreaming, he’ll often catch you off guard with a disarmingly wide-eyed, focused stare that makes you feel like he’s peering into your very soul.
