Thirty five years after Gilroy's garlicky extravaganza officially kicked off for the first time, one name – at least in these vampire-free parts – has grown to become synonymous with the aromatic herb and the world renown festival it inspired.

About 100 bags of charcoal weighing 20 pounds each and wrapped in heavy plastic were heaped in a pile at Christmas Hill Park Tuesday afternoon – charcoal that in a matter of hours from now will be used to cook up several of the famed garlic dishes expected to draw 100,000-plus patrons to Gilroy this weekend.

The Gilroy woman who killed her husband and daughter in a drunken car crash last year cried her way through her murder trial Wednesday morning.

Fire crews quickly extinguished a residential structure fire on the patio of an apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Fire trucks responded to the fire at 215 Del Monte Avenue about 4:30 p.m. CalFire Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke called the blaze a “small fire,” and did not result in any injuries or significant damage. The initial investigation determined the fire was caused by a lit cigarette discarded “too close to combustible” materials, Leitzke said.
