scheduling miscue and a referee that left the building before the
Mustangs’ varsity team was able to arrive on the scene.

Just about everything went wrong for Gilroy High’s girls volleyball teams Tuesday, as their games were canceled due to a scheduling miscue and a referee that left the building before the Mustangs’ varsity team was able to arrive on the scene.
The game has been rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 27., at Notre Dame.
Now Gilroy will need to focus on its upcoming contest Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at home against Salinas, which sits in first place of the Tri-County Athletic League at 8-0. With only five games remaining, a 2-3 finish is necessary to have a .500 record in league and any chance of qualifying for the Central Coast Section playoffs.
“At least 2-3 in the final five games would give us a chance to submit (an application),” Gilroy coach Sue Grogan said.
Gilroy is currently fourth in the TCAL at 4-3, but there is reason to believe the Mustangs could pull off the upset against Salinas. No TCAL squad other than San Benito, which took Salinas to five sets, has given the Cowboys a closer match than Gilroy did. The four-set defeat on Sept. 30 saw neither team win a game by more than the mandatory two points. (24-26, 23-25, 25-23, 27-29)
Most recently, Gilroy beat Alvarez on Oct. 16.: 25-7, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19.
The upcoming week will play a big role in deciding the Mustangs’ fate, as they will play three games in four days: Notre Dame on Monday, Alisal on Tuesday and San Benito on Thursday.
Alisal will be the final home game of the season, while also serving as Senior Night. In addition to the game, Gilroy will be holding its Third Annual Pumpkin Auction, in which all three GHS teams will carve a pumpkin to be sold by silent auction to fans. The winners will be announced after the first set of the varsity contest.
“Its kind of cute because we try and get a little competition between the three teams to see who can get the highest bid, and parents get into it,” Grogan said.
