Salinas – Notre Dame did just enough Wednesday to hold off Gilroy 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 in Tri-County Athletic League girls’ volleyball.

“That’s about as close as you can be without winning,” said Mustangs’ coach Sue Grogan. “I thought we would come back on them in the third game.”

GHS was still without senior setter Jennifer Smith, who has a jammed finger, so the Mustangs had two freshman see plenty of action. Lindsay Meazell was one of them, combining with Brittany Balanessi for 15 assists. Lindsey Foster was the other freshman seeing varsity action.

Vanessa Wilkins led GHS with four kills, three blocks and 19 digs. Caitlin Chisholm had 13 digs.

The GHS junior varsity lost to Notre Dame 25-18, 25-18, and the Mustangs’ freshmen were on the short end of a 25-5, 25-17 score.
