Dear Editor:

My name is Loi Dong and I think I am getting ripped off!

My wife and I bought the building at 7347 Monterey Street in 1963 and operated a Chinese Restaurant for 40 years.

The City of Gilroy is planning to purchase property for the new Cultural Art Center. They have offered me $97,000.

I will be unable to buy another house in which to live for that small amount. Other property only slightly larger than mine was considered to be worth $310,000.

The statement was made that the city was obligated to operate based on fair market value. Property on a downtown main thoroughfare has a higher market value than offered me.

Based on property that has been sold in the recent and not-so-recent past what has been offered me is ridiculously low.
