Nursery rhyme for Mr. Zappa: Oh where, oh where has the MayorAl
recall gone, oh where, oh where could it be? It’s been forever
since we all heard how horrible our town’s mayor could be. But talk
is talk and action is not, so let’s get on with the show. Either
recall the mayor, or let us all know that you’ve decided to let it
go.

Go, go to college … it’s a big deal, of course, and Gavilan’s Transfer Day on the docket for Thursday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. is a great idea … but it could be better, and would be if Gavilan combined forces with the area high schools to host “College Fair Saturday” that included high school and college students and parents. That way, colleges could have a presentation time in a separate area along with the current booth visits and 40 representatives from colleges and universities might turn into 75. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity, too, to reach out to high school students and introduce them to all Gavilan has to offer while providing a beefed-up college fair service to the community. How about it President Steve Kinsella, a Christmas present for the community?
Christmas stuff in the stores and it’s not Thanksgiving, heck it’s not even November! … and snow could cancel a World Series game. We’ve all gone bonkers, so mark your calendar for this year’s Gilroy Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting downtown on Saturday, Dec. 5. And that’s all I have to say about that for now …
Except that Lizzaran Tapas Restaurant will be open then and a good plan would be to head downtown for the fun and over to Lizzaran afterward for some good eats. Had a sneak preview from the Lizzaran kitchen and a chance to meet Joe Walton – Gary’s brother – who will be running the show. Delicious! Our Old City Hall building not only looks fantastic inside with the Spanish-flavored decor, but the variety of tapas served were fresh and flavorful.
MayorAl tells me it’s fresh and flavorful, but I thought when he talked about a corned beef-sausage combination, he was feeding me an Irish-Portuguese line. Turns out there’s something called Cozido à Portuguesa … now all I need is a good recipe from one of the fabulous cooks at the Portuguese Hall. That way, I can dazzle my poker buddies with a new hearty meal. Then, I could also suggest to Sam Bozzo and Gene Sakahara that they head over to the P-Hall for a video taping segment on how to prepare Cozido à Celtica and we’ll post it to our Web site for Gilroy residents to see and try …
See, I’m really not sure if anyone really cares that the Gilroy DMV is shuttered every other Friday or that City Hall does likewise? How relevant are the closures to people’s lives? Not sure, but we haven’t had a single Red Phone gripe about either or a letter to the editor, so it does make you wonder …
Know someone or some business that’s done wonderful things in Gilroy? Don’t ponder, nominate. Citizen and Business nominations now being accepted by the Chamber of Commerce, but you have to hurry. Top-Notch Educator, Man, Woman, Large Business and Small Business will be named. More info from the Chamber at 842-6437 …
Just for the record, Gilroy doesn’t have citizens, it has residents – or Gilroyans if you prefer the provincial. The United States of America has citizens. And thanks, by the way, to the resident of Gilroy and U.S. citizen who pointed out the tattered and torn flags flying at Las Animas Veterans Park. Shame on us, but the good news is that this is a problem that can and will be solved right quick now that its been made public.
Have to make public Rob Oneto’s idea for a downtown brewery/meatery. And here it is – made me laugh out loud – and, perhaps, it’s not a bad idea at all (see picture).
Good ideas abound, but Brandon Ellenberg’s creation – a simple website to help raise enough money for the entire 6th-grade class at Solorsano Middle School to attend science camp – ranks right up there. Visitors to http://sciencecamp.gilroypromo.com can donate to the good cause easily. One suggestion for Brandon: A couple of paragraphs on the value of the science camp experience with some quotes from students who’ve attended might help motivate visitors to give a bit more.
