The following individuals and organizations deserve either
CHEERS or JEERS this week:
JEERS: For the fact that local Ohlone Indians were not even
brought into the loop by the Miwok Indians who are floating a
proposal to build an Indian casino on Highway 25 close to the
intersection with U.S. 101.
The following individuals and organizations deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the fact that local Ohlone Indians were not even brought into the loop by the Miwok Indians who are floating a proposal to build an Indian casino on Highway 25 close to the intersection with U.S. 101. That shows a lack of respect and, regardless of how early in the process this idea is, the local Native Americans should have been consulted.

CHEERS: For Gilroy Unified School District teachers and staff members who have been busily preparing for the start of the school year. It seems to get earlier and earlier each year … but that’s an aside. Lesson plans, classroom preparation and meetings galore have marked the last week for GUSD staff members. Let’s appreciate those efforts by making sure our students are just as well prepared for class come Monday morning.

CHEERS: For a bill that, if passed, would make information about where sex offenders are living available to everyone on the Internet. As it is now, residents must go to the police department or sheriff’s office during certain times to access this information. If the bill passes, California would join the 30 other states already posting locations online. Parents deserve to know which, if any, of their neighbors could be potentially dangerous and this bill makes that information readily available.

JEERS: For the amount of personal money Gilroy teachers report they have to spend on school supplies. Help a teacher out on the first day and drop off one of the items on our “teacher wish list” in today’s newspaper.

CHEERS: For the Gilroy High School Cheerleading squad which went “All out for Erin,” their fallen teammate at a recent competition and won a trip to the NFL’s Pro Bowl earning superior ratings. GHS also won the team unity award. Erin Kinkel, who died in a tragic accident, is smiling somewhere.
