GILROY – Gilroyans with hazardous waste including aerosol sprayers and other common polluters will have a chance to dispose of them in a safe way on Saturday at Orchard Supply Hardware, 303 E. 10th St.

The Gilroy Police Department and OSH are teaming up to assume responsibility for hazardous materials disposal while spreading the word about the city’s anti-graffiti program.

The GPD will oversee a number of large hazardous materials barrels that will be at OSH from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and later transferred to South County’s hazard waste dump site in San Martin.

Saturday’s event is the first of its kind, according to OSH spokesperson Chris Meyers. OSH maintains more than 80 stores throughout California.

“I did some investigating and saw that the Gilroy Police Department had a very good anti-graffiti program. So I though that would be the best place to start this,” Meyers said. “This is a great way to educate the public on hazardous materials, including the harm caused by spray-paint graffiti.”

The GPD will distribute material at the event detailing the environmental damages caused by spray paint and other common household items containing harmful chemicals.

OSH will also supply information to educate people on the type of chemicals typically found in a hardware store that are inhaled or “huffed” by teenagers.

“This is just one more avenue to make sure hazardous materials get properly disposed,” said Sandra Sammut, a community service officer with the GPD. “Hopefully the community will take advantage of this opportunity.”
