GILROY – An early one-run lead in the bottom of the first inning was as close as Gilroy baseball was going to get to earning a victory over the visiting Palma Chieftains Saturday.
Despite taking the early lead on a run scored by Gabriel Bonilla, who got on base through a walk, the Mustangs saw the game get just beyond reach as the Mustangs fell into third place in the Tri-County Athletic League standings with a 4-1 defeat.
The Mustangs currently trail Palma (11-1 overall, 8-1 TCAL) and San Benito (11-3-1, 6-1) with a 7-5 record overall, 5-2 mark in league.
Junior pitcher Taylor Chris (2-2) took the loss for Gilroy, giving up three earned runs on three hits and six walks. He struck out two batters.
Three Mustangs – Max Fishler, Tyler Price and Neal Dinsmore – came on in relief, with Price allowing the final run of the game in the top of the seventh.
Tucker Minor got to 5-0 on the season with the win for Palma, striking out five and walking four. D.J. Slaton earned his third save of the season with two innings or work in relief.
The Chieftains, who scored two runs in the second inning, one in the fifth and one more in the final frame, could have come away with a larger victory had they not left eight batters on base. Gilroy left five on base and had just two hits to Palma’s seven. Both teams recorded one error.
The Mustangs will have a chance to exact some revenge Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. when they play at Palma.
