Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department announced Matt Anderson, a 19-year veteran of the department, as its latest chief park ranger Thursday.

Anderson, 45, will take over the supervision of all park rangers and kiosk staff throughout Santa Clara County, including South County’s Mount Madonna, Uvas Reservoir and Coyote Creek Parkway. The 27 county parks encompass nearly 45,000 acres of rural retreat in the urban valley.

“I’m looking forward to preparing our staff to provide the quality of services that befit the beautiful settings of all Santa Clara County Parks,” Anderson said.

Prior to his appointment, Anderson served as a park ranger, a senior park ranger and supervisor since he started working for the department in April 1986.

“For close to two decades, Matt has continually shown the dedication and commitment necessary to achieve our goal of providing the best experience possible for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts,” said Lisa Killough, director of the department.

Anderson graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in administration of justice. A native of Berkeley, he currently resides in San Jose with his wife, Debbie and newborn son, Dylan.

Anderson also will oversee Volunteer and Interpretive Programs. Volunteer Programs include clean-up days throughout the county and other monthly projects. Activities in South County include a hike through Coyote Creek Saturday and a wildlife hunt through Uvas Canyon Sunday.
