Dear Editor:
It is always a treat to hear from Stuart Allen, as we did in his latest outburst in the Sept. 22 edition of this newspaper. It seems as though Mr. Allen can only go so long suffering in silence about the universal unremitting evils of liberalism before he is compelled to go off like a venomous volcano, spewing what he thinks is clever vitriol in every direction.
First he attributes the presently happy and prosperous state of mankind to the fruits of American conservatism despite the fact that much or all of it is also found in other countries with less-than-conservative governments. No matter. He then proceeds to the statement, truly breathtaking in scope, that “I have not seen a single liberal policy position that has not been for personal gain at the expense of the general welfare.” This leads to his wow-finish in which he describes the progressive movement as a collection of “liars, cheats, thieves, traitors, and killers.” Very nice.
There are several possible reasons why Mr. Allen might be unable to see a single liberal policy position that “has not been for personal gain at the expense …” etc. Perhaps he was abused as a child, forced to work in a factory at slave wages. He will be happy to know that children are no longer treated in this fashion thanks to the liberal-introduced child labor laws. Maybe he has a history of being discriminated against, but as the result of the liberal Civil Rights Act of 1964 and those that followed, we’ve made substantial progress in that area. Perhaps he cannot see because he is blind, in which case he will be treated fairly in almost all areas of our society thanks to the Americans With Disabilities Act, another liberal “policy position.” Perhaps rather than being blind Mr. Allen is simply a moron, for which there are also programs available under the ADA which could possibly benefit him.
Or perhaps Mr. Allen is actually opposed to civil rights, to keeping children out of sweatshops, and to fair treatment for the disabled because by his bizarre definition these things exist merely for the personal gain of liberals at the expense of the “general welfare.” Perhaps Mr. Allen is really a proudly-obnoxious sociopath who enjoys taking outrageously offensive positions because it feeds some inner twisted need. For that, liberals unfortunately have nothing that will help, and we will all just have to endure these periodic demonstrations of emotional instability. Sorry about that.
