Plane Makes Emergency Landing in San Martin Field
San Martin – A biplane made an emergency landing in a field next to Mamma’s Market in San Martin. The pilot was making his final approach about 3:15pm Saturday, when power failed to the engine, said Lt. Dale Unger, Sheriff’s office. An off-duty Sheriff’s deputy driving on U.S. 101 saw the plane descending and used his cell phone to call a Sheriff’s sergeant, who sped to the scene. South County firefighters arrived as well.
The plane descended safely, without sustaining any damage or injury to the pilot, its only passenger. “There wasn’t a scratch on him,” said Lt. Dale Unger, who responded to the scene. S
Four-Car Accident on Highway 152
Gilroy – Four people suffered minor injuries after a four-car accident on Highway 152. Salinas resident Reynaldo Mendoza, 39, was driving westbound on Highway 152 east of Pacheco Creek Bridge at 9:18pm Sunday when for unknown reasons he rear-ended a car driven by Gilroy resident Fidelina Garcia, 34. Garcia hit another car driven by Tommy Giang of San Jose, pushing it against a guard rail and into the right side of a car driven by San Jose resident Kathy Valentine. Valentine’s car was propelled into the opposite guard rail. Meanwhile, Garcia and Mendoza’s vehicles were propelled into eastbound lanes, blocking traffic. Garcia and Valentine’s passenger, Khristine Resurrecion, 21, were transported to local medical centers for minor head injuries.
Giang also suffered a cut to his hand, and Mendoza complained of head pain, but the two were not transported. No arrests were made. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and said that none of the drivers were under the influence at the time of the crash.
