Those infamous words from the literary classic by Charles Dickens, “Oliver Twist,” ring especially true each holiday season.

We hear it ceaselessly after all – so many charities need so much “more.” More clothes, more food, more money. … There are homeless and hungry and battered among us, and, just perhaps, it would be easy to ignore the pleas this year.

Please don’t. Hear the call for “more.” The adage “Many hands make light work” applies.

No, you can’t solve the world’s problems, but there are so many acts of generosity and kindness that can make a difference in people’s lives.

Start with a possible plan. Here are a few:

• Write a check and send it to St. Joseph’s Family Center or the Lord’s Table.

• Adopt-A-Family through the Salvation Army. program. You, your family, office or organization can adopt a family and help provide food, new toys, warm clothing and other necessities to a family in need. Details: Major Carlos Gonzzatti at 848-5373.

• Clean out a closet and make a donation to the Goodwill. There are numerous collection trucks in Gilroy.

• At the toy store, buy an extra thingamajig, wrap it and give it to one of the many toy collection stations in town. (There’s one at Garlic City Coffee in downtown Gilroy if you need a locale).

• Pick a volunteer activity such as bell ringing for the Salvation Army and make a commitment 848-5373.

Second, make an action plan – and get your family involved. “In giving, we receive.” Those are not hollow words. Teaching your children about generosity and kindness is a lifelong gift that will enrich their lives and the lives of others.

We are a generous nation and, closer to home, a wonderfully giving community.

So Gilroyans, when you hear that plea this holiday, give generously and with a glad heart.
