Teachers beat students in first GHS Powder Puff football game in
over 10 years
Gilroy – Men in skirts running around the sidelines of the Gilroy High football field could only mean one thing: Powder Puff football was back.

After a 10-year plus absence, the old Gilroy High tradition returned Friday afternoon, pitting members of the female student body against a team of GHS female staff members.

All the while, several male Mustang coaches and teachers put on the skirts, picked up the pom pons and acted as the game’s cheerleaders.

In the end, experience prevailed over youth, with the GHS staff team pulling out a 6-0 win thanks to an 80-yard touchdown run down the right sideline by academic coordinator Donya Maiorino in the third quarter.

In the game’s other highlight, the student team came up with an interception. But teacher Gretchen Yoder-Schrock stopped the ensuing breakaway run 20 yards short of a touchdown with a diving grab of the flag for an important down before halftime.
