Gilroy Mustangs

After losing its home opener by a lone goal, the Christopher boys soccer team rebounded in a big way.
The Cougars powered past Gunderson 6-1 Tuesday night at home to record their first win of the season.
Anthony Ambriz led the Cougars with two goals against the Grizzlies. Brandon Kim, Johnnie Rojas, Erik (?) and Carlos Arroyo all added goals for Christopher. Arroyo, who is also the Cougars’ goalie, scored on a penalty.
Christopher (1-1) will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to host Live Oak, weather permitting.
Gilroy’s skid ends with Harbor
It took just one goal to end Gilroy’s two-game skid.
The Mustangs scored in the first half of Tuesday’s second round Oak Grove Gold Cup match with Harbor at home and it was enough to carry them to victory.
Cruz Garcia, Gilroy’s 4-10 freshman, scored the first goal of his high school in the 25th minute off a pass from senior Efren Pineda. Garcia took a shot from 25 yards out and fired it past Harbor’s keeper to the upper right side of the net.
Gilroy (1-2) will continue play in the Oak Grove Tournament Thursday, weather permitting.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Gilroy bests Greenfield
Gilroy picked up its fourth win of the year after beating Greenfield 44-33 Tuesday at home.
Stats and scoring from this game were not yet available.
The Mustangs (4-1) will be back on the court at 3:30 p.m. Thursday to play Harbor in the opening day of the Watsonville Tournament.
Los Gatos tops Christopher
Christopher dropped its fourth straight game, losing 72-32 to Los Gatos at home Tuesday.
The Wildcats built a 20-9 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 39-19 at the half. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the deficit was too great to overcome after the break.
Stats from this game were not yet available.
Christopher (0-4) will be back in action at 7 p.m. Thursday at Los Altos High School.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gilroy falls to Monterey
After a slow start, Gilroy seemed to have found its groove against Monterey in the second half. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, it was too little, too late.
Gilroy dropped its fifth straight game, falling 63-44 to the Toreadors Tuesday on the road.
Stats from this game were not yet available.
The Mustangs were held to just 16 points in the first half while giving up 35 to Monterey. They were able to regroup and post 28 after the break, but the early edge gave Monterey all it needed for the win.
Gilroy will begin play in the 35th annual Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Trinity Christian. Anzar and Live Oak open the tournament at 3:30 p.m., followed by Christopher vs. Oakwood at 5 p.m. Seaside vs. Aptos will be the final match of the day at 8 p.m.
