A big second half propelled Gilroy to its second win of the season.
The Mustangs, behind goals from Fernando Lares and Efren Pineda, topped Westmont 2-1 at the Oak Grove Cup Tournament Friday on the road.Â
The Warriors scored off a corner kick with just seconds remaining in the first half to take a 1-0 lead at the break.Â
Gilroy entered the second half hungry and its intensity paid off when Lares scored the equalizer off David Solorzano’s assist. Lares played the ball to himself and beat the keeper, who was sprinting off the line to close the gap. Lares remained focused and found the back of the net for his first goal in a Mustang uniform to tie the game at 1-1.
Sean Kaufman and the Gilroy defense helped keep the Warriors off the board despite several chances. Efren Pineda finally broke the tie when he brought down Kaufman’s cross of a freekick. Pineda controlled the ball from the top of the 18-yard-line and fired a shot passed the keeper for the game winner.
Keeper Jaime Ulloa came up with a big save in the final minutes to preserve the win.
Gilroy (2-2-0) will host Silver Creek at 5:15 p.m. today.
