It came down Victor Vong at No. 4-singles but the Mustangs pulled out a 4-3 win.
“It was close all the way,” Langer said.
Vong, won his match in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 to secure the clinching point and also wrapping up a sweep of the four singles matches for the Mustangs.
The one downside, if there is any in a victory, is that GHS dropped all of its doubles matches.
“They had really good doubles. They were head and shoulders above anyone we have seen so far,” Langer said.
But back on the bright side, Vinh Vong easily dispatched his opponent, Jeremy Ortiz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
“Vinh is just in control,” Langer said. “He is playing so much better than last year, and he was really good last year, too.”
The other two singles players followed suit as both Oliver Drewry (No. 2-singles) and Ryan Azad (No. 3-singles) broke down their challengers in straight sets as well.
CHS JV baseball comes from five down to win
Fighting back from an early 5-0 hole, the Christopher High baseball team pulled out a 6-5 victory over the Live Oak JV squad Monday in Morgan Hill.
After the Acorns put a 5-spot up in the bottom of the second inning, the Cougars responded with four runs of their own in the top of the third. Ryan Fredricks got the inning started with a base hit which was promptly followed by a pair of singles by Bryant Cid and Nathan Davis. Brandon Irby and Nick Cordova also had hits as Fredricks, Cid, Davis and Irby all came across in the four-run inning.
The Cougars tied it up in the fourth and took the lead in the top of the seventh on a Mario Talamante hit and fielding error, scoring Cid.
Talamante, who came in to pitch in the sixth, relieving starting pitcher Brian Ransom, found himself in a bit of a jam in the Acorns’ seventh. However, with one out and a runner on second, the Cougars turned a wild game-ending double play. The Cougars are 2-0 on the season and play St. Francis C.C.C today in Watsonville at 4 p.m.
Diaz De Leon receives co-MVP recognition
Sophomore Jonathan Diaz De Leon was named the Tri-County Athletic League’s co-Most Valuable Player as well as the Offensive Player of the Year, and seven other Mustangs were awarded league honors for the 2009-10 boys soccer season.
Diaz De Leon shared the MVP honor with Alisal’s Enrique Montano, who helped lead the Trojans to the CCS Division I title. Diaz De Leon led the Mustangs (13-5-2, 9-2-1 TCAL) with 10 goals on the year.
Josh Gonzales, Kristian Urias and Luis Galvan were named to the TCAL’s First-Team, with Galvan, a defensive staple for GHS, also voted Sophomore of the Year.
Jorge Sanchez, the team’s second-leading scorer with seven tallies, Forrest Alvarez and Jose Luis Lopez grabbed spots on the Second-Team. Clemente Pineda received the Richard Chamberlin Sportsmanship Award.
Hill, Foster net First-Team honors for Lady Mustangs
Gilroy High’s junior do-it-all forward Chelsea Hill led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 11.7 points per game this season, earning her runner-up in the Tri-County Athletic League Most Valuable Player voting as well as an All-League First-Team nod.
Senior Lindsey Foster, with her 9.4 points per game average, was also named to the First-Team. Fellow senior Sovi Nou, the Lady Mustangs’ most lethal threat from beyond the arc, was awarded for her efforts with a spot on the Second-Team.
Senior Laura Steele grabbed a spot on the All-Defense team, while junior Dani Hemeon took home the sportsmanship award.
