The Cougars baseball team kicked off Monterey Bay League-Gabilan competition with a 4-3 win over Palma at home Tuesday.
Christopher put up a three-spot in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Chieftains scored a run in the top of the fourth, but the Cougars immediately answered to widen their lead to 4-2.
Palma pushed one more across in the top of the seventh, but a stellar performance by Alec Cordova on the bump preserved the win. Cordova allowed one run on two hits and struck two in an inning of work.
Andreu Bartholic was awarded the ‘W’. He allowed two runs on five hits, struck out two and walked one through four innings.
Makaio Duyao led the Cougars by going 2 for 3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Josh Wheat and Darren Santos both went 1 for 2. Wheat had an RBI and Santos scored a run for Christopher.
Anthony Rodriguez and Gordy Papalias also scored a run for the home team.
Christopher (3-3 overall, 1-0 in league) will be back on the diamond at 4 p.m. Thursday at Palma.
BOYS GOLF
Mustangs 2nd at MBL match
Magnus Myhr led Gilroy to a second place finish at Tuesday’s MBL Pacific Division Match and earned medalist honors for his performance.Â
Myhr carded a 41, helping the Mustangs to a 251 total team score Tuesday at Eagle Ridge Golf Course. North Monterey County finished first with 237. Alvarez was third with a 269, followed by Watsonville (280), Alisal (302) and North Salinas (317).Â
Gilroy’s Avery Trevino was right behind Myhr, carding a 43. Alex Bakita scored a 51, Nick Triolo a 53 and Desmon Hernandez a 63. Brendan Peddie rounded out scoring for the Mustangs with a 67.
Balers top CougarsÂ
For the second time in less than a week the Cougars and Balers duked it out on the golf course. Unfortunately for Christopher, the result was the same.Â
San Benito easily beat the Cougars Tuesday at San Juan Oaks golf course.Â
Dylan Saulo led the team, carding a 45.Â
Christopher will be back at it at 3 p.m. Thursday when it takes on its MBL opponents at Spring Hills in Watsonville.
SOFTBALL
Cougars blanked by Soquel
Christopher dropped its second straight game, falling 4-0 to Valley Christian in San Jose Tuesday.Â
VC scored three runs in the first and another in the fourth off seven hits for the win.Â
The Cougars (2-2) look to rebound when they take on Soquel at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on the road.Â
Oak Grove edges Mustangs
Gilroy fell 5-4 to Oak Grove Tuesday on the road.
Oak Grove scored three runs in the bottom of the second and the Mustangs evened the score in the top of the third.
Gilroy took the lead with a run in the top of the seventh, but Oak Grove pushed two across in the bottom of the inning for the finals.
Stats were not available by presstime.
The Mustangs will take on Sobrato at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Mustangs fall to Pajaro Valley
Gilroy dropped its third straight game, falling 3-0 to Pajaro Valley Tuesday on the road in the league opener.
The Mustangs lost 15-25 12-25 17-25.Â
Gilroy (3-3 overall, 0-1 in league) will look to right the ship against Soledad at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
