The Christopher girls tennis team strengthened its case for a Pacific Division title by besting Notre Dame 4-3 Tuesday in Salinas.
The Cougars recorded wins in the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles matches as well as in the No. 1 doubles bout.Â
No. 2 Jade Bardrick picked up an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over ND’s Francesca Speciale. No. 3 Tiffany Roberts made easy work of her opponent too, beating Meghan Paulo 6-2, 6-0. Christopher’s Liz Levan, the No. 3 singles player, rounded out the singles wins with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Claire Sutliff.Â
The No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlyn Lombardo and Kelly Nantais beat Morgan Haughey and Clare Horne in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to notch the decisive win for Christopher.Â
No. 1 singles player Adena Chen won her first set 6-4, but ND’s Kate Chilton rebounded win a 6-3 win in the second to force the tiebreaker. Chilton won the final set 10-4.Â
The No. 2 and 3 doubles teams also took their matches to extra sets. Maila Campos and Sara Blawski, the No. 2 team, dropped their first set 4-6, but won the second 6-2. ND’s Haley Georgalos and Micayle Hansen pulled out a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker for the win. The No.3 team of Sydney Tran and Toni Martinez won their first set 6-3, but lost the second 2-6. They fell to ND’s April Maniwnag and Sam Ginete in a hard fought tiebreaker 10-12.
Christopher will host North Salinas at 4 p.m. Thursday.Â
Gilroy bested by MVC
Gilroy took on Monte Vista Christian Tuesday, but were only able to muster up one win.Â
The Mustangs fell 6-1 to MVC on the road. The No. 1 doubles team of Savanna Brandon and Mya Esquivel came up with Gilroy’s lone win. They pair dropped the first set 2-6, but won the second 6-3 to force a tiebreaker. Brandon and Esquivel battled and came out on top with a 10-8 win.Â
No. 1 singles player Jessica Martin fell 2-6, 6-7 and No. 2 Nicole Holder lost 4-6, 2-6. No. 3 singles player Flor Lopez was handed a 1-6, 0-6 loss and Catherine Bell, the No. 4, lost 1-6, 2-6.Â
The No. 2 doubles team of Maggie Pickford and Angela Martin lost 3-6, 3-6. Ada Gailey and Carissa Jackson, the No. 3 team, also lost 1-6, 2-6.
Gilroy will be back on the court to host Monterey at 4 p.m. Thursday.Â
FIELD HOCKEY
Cougars shut down Santa Catalina
To say Christopher has been stellar at home would be an understatement. The Cougars haven’t allowed a single goal since playing their first home game on Oct. 14—but they’ve scored 26 of their own.Â
Eleven of those goals came in the Cougars’ 11-0 win over Santa Catalina Tuesday at home. Erin Mank and Sherelle Butler each recorded a hat trick in the game.Â
Isabel Medina and Nikki Villanueva added two goals each, while Jacqueline Hufferd scored one.Â
Christopher (8-3-1 overall, 7-1-1 in league) will host Robert Louis Stevenson at 3:30 p.m. Friday.Â
GIRLS GOLF
Cougars top Alvarez in windy battle
Christopher had to make adjustments on the fly during Tuesday’s contest against Everett Alvarez.
The Cougars, playing in a wind stricken contest, changed their club choices and strategy to the tight fairways of the course to pull out a 267-296 win.Â
Natalie Gutierrez was the match medalist, carding a 44 on the day. Alex Granados was right on her heels with a 48, followed by Nina Velez with a 53. Mia Navarro scored a 60 and Frankie Vanni rounded out scoring with a 62.Â
The Cougars (10-2) also recorded wins over Monte Vista Christian (298-340) and Trinity Christian (249-380) on Oct. 16 and 14, respectively. Gutierrez and Granados shared medalist honors in the match against Trinity as both scored a 46.
Christopher will play its final match of the regular season at 3:30 p.m. today against Salinas. The league championships will be held Monday at Rancho Canada Golf Course with a shotgun start of 11 a.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Salinas blanks Christopher
Christopher lost to Salinas in straight sets Tuesday at home.Â
The Cowboys won 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 for the win.Â

BOYS WATER POLO
SLV edges Christopher
Christopher and San Lorenzo Valley were neck and neck through three periods, but the hosts gain the edge in the final frame.Â
SLV topped Christopher 9-8 Tuesday in Felton. Both teams recorded two goals a piece through the first three periods, but SLV outscored the Cougars 3-2 in the fourth.

GIRLS WATER POLO
SLV tops Christopher
San Lorenzo Valley roared past Christopher, beating them 16-4 Tuesday in Felton.Â
Christopher was held to just two goals in the first half to trail SLV 6-2 at the break. The hosts notched four more in the third and six in the fourth, while holding Christopher to a goal in each period.Â

Gilroy falls to Watsonville
The Gilroy JV squad lost 2-0 to the visiting Watsonville Tuesday at home.Â
The Mustangs lost 18-25, 9-25 to the Wildcatz.
Jade Borges and Nathalie Contreras each recorded a kill. Michele Mickelson, Jessica Martinez, Vanessa Barboza, Borges and Contreras all served 100 percent.Â
Gilroy will be back on the court at 5 p.m. Thursday to host Monterey.Â
